It is named after a sunburst on the horizon seen from their rancho situated on a high mountain peak. The Chavez family continued to live in Sunland Park until they sold the land to the U.S. government for military use during World War II. The government used Sunland Park as an airbase and later developed it into a small community with schools, businesses, and homes. Sunland Park is now a Historic District that includes over 100 contributing properties dating back to 1907-1947.
