The first post office was established in Sunland Park on July 7, 1854. In 1863 it moved to its present location and became a territorial city under the administration of Albuquerque County. On November 5, 1912, it was moved from Albuquerque to Gallup and became a municipality within Gallup County. It reverted back to its municipal status on December 3, 1936 after becoming a village within neighboring Socorro County. On January 1, 1945 it became an unincorporated community within Gallup County and has since been known as Sunland Park
Sunland Park was founded in 1907 by Hiram Hatch and his wife, Emma. The town mostly consisted of adobe buildings and was known for its irrigation systems. The town developed into a small community with around 100 residents before it was destroyed by a fire in 1915. Sunland Park was rebuilt and continued to grow until it merged with the neighboring towns of Pecos and Carlsbad in 1955.
