Sunland Park is a small town in New Mexico, located about 30 miles northeast of Gallup. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sunland Park–ighamark Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Sunland Park were Spanish missionaries in 1824. The name "Sunland" probably comes from the Chiricahua Apache word suni or "hill." In 1860, John Wesley Powell and his party explored and mapped the Rocky Mountains and discovered Sunland Park while on their way to explore Anadarko National Forest. In 1886, A.J. Sells built a large rancho called Adobe Walls near Sunland Park for his family and their employees. The Adobe Walls windmill still stands today in Sunland Park; it was donated to the town by Mr. Sells' wife in 1978. In 1926, Jens Jensen started an agricultural operation that remains operational today; he was the first farmer to grow corn, beans, cotton, potatoes and other vegetables at what is now Suniland Park Airport (located south of Adobe Walls). In 1936, Harry Pogue developed land east of Adobe Walls for a new airfield known as Pogue Field which would become home to Eastern Air Lines' Albuquerque-New Mexico Regional Airport (now El Paso County International Airport). He also began construction on what would eventually become Sunrise Boulevard which ran through Suniland Park with its original homes being built alongside it until 1951 when all homes were razed to make way for Aviation Row shopping center which now occupies much of that area.. In 1925, Clyde Dutton opened his Dutton's grocery store on State Highway 87A north of central Sunlanders park . It would become one of the most successful grocery stores in New Mexico because its location allowed customers easy access to everything they needed without having to go far away from their home or business. Dutton's store would remain open until it closed in 1984 due to changes within New Mexico's food industry which made shopping easier online than ever before。
