However, by the late 1960s, Sunland Park had begun to decline as its population dwindled due to economic stagnation and increased crime rates. In 1978, Sunland Park was merged into the larger city of Albuquerque. Today, it remains a small rural community that relies heavily on agriculture and local tourism
Sunland Park, New Mexico is a small city located in the southern reaches of the US state of New Mexico. The population was 9,865 at the 2010 census. Sunland Park is bordered by Valencia to the south and east, Deming to the north and west, and Gallup to the northwest. The climate of Sunland Park is generally warm-summer Mediterranean with a significant amount of precipitation from winter to summer months. The first Spanish settlers in what would become Sunland Park arrived in 1692 after landing on an isolated peninsula near where present-day Deming stands. From here they explored and surveyed much of what would be later included in northeastern New Mexico. They built their sod huts on hills that remain today as part of Sunland Park's municipal limits. In 1881, when New Mexico became a state, Johnson County was established within it and incorporated as a town. A year later Johnson County Commissioners voted to name SunlandPark after George Washington Maxwell who had been President pro tempore (prime minister) during the American Civil War and twice served as Secretary of State under Ulysses S Grant. Johnson County experienced rapid growth following its incorporation into statehood; by 1900 it had over 50 residents living in 10 townships including SunlandPark proper. At this point many farmers began moving into what would become SunlandPark from other parts of New Mexico while others founded businesses such as banks or grocery stores thereabouts. The city's original main street - Avenida de la Huerta - still exists today as one of its key commercial corridors with several large local businesses including two banks (First National Bank & Trust Company and Pueblo National Bank), three restaurants/bars (Anchor Inn, Rio Grande Cafe & Tavern, Golden Corral), four grocery stores (Granada Grocery Co., Noble Drug Store & Pharmacy, Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., etc.), two post offices (Sunlands Post Office #1 and #2), two schools (Lincoln High School for Girls and Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Elementary School), five parks (Municipal park #1 through Municipal park #5), six churches ([St Joseph's Catholic Church] through Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Protestant church) along with various other services provided by community organizations like Nursery Home Association, Mothers' Aid Society etc.). Today Monterrey International Airport provides passenger service en route to destinations throughout North America while also providing occasional charter flights for tourists visiting Suniland Park or nearby villages including Deming or Gallup

Sunland Park was founded in 1881 by Scots-Irish farmers and ranchers who came to the area during the early days of railroad development in the Southwest United States. Today, Sunland Park is a popular tourist destination and bedroom community for residents of Navajo County. The first settlers in Sunland Park were Irish immigrants who arrived in 1881 from Braybeare, County Clare, Ireland. The location at which Sunland Park was established is significant because it is one of only two townships in Navajo County that were not part of the original land grant given to Navajos by President James K. Polk in 1879. In 1881, these Irish settlers erected a log cabin on parcels that now make up much of Sunland Park. At first, they did all their own farming and ranching while waiting for developments around them to take off. Over time, however, more Scots-Irish immigrants started arriving and began working on local farms as well. This early agricultural activity led to the foundation of several businesses including a grocery store and post office which opened in 1886. By 1925, there were four churches and over 100 families residing in Sunland Park according to census records from that year. During World War II most residents chose not to fight but worked instead on munitions factories or other war-time jobs throughout the country; however, some members of the communityVolunteered with The Red Cross Blood drives as ambulance drivers or operated farm vehicles for The Salvation Army during WWII . In recent years many people have bought into what has been called "the revival" happening within Sunland Park since 2006 when pastor Donny Payne started leading worship services at First Presbyterian Church downtown which soon became known as "the mainstage." This new direction has seen growth within artistic programming such as plays/movies/music events etc., and also within social media presence with such things as an official website (www.sunlandsparknewmexico dot com), Facebook page (), Twitter account (@SunlandsParkNewMexico)and Instagram account (@sunlandsparknewmexico). There are plans currently underway for construction on additional acres adjacent to First Presbyterian Church giving birth again to what will become known as "the park."
