The first European to visit what is now Sunland Park was Juan Bautista de Anza in 1798. He sighted a range of mountains and called them "Mountain Passes" because they looked like gates on an immigration route from California toMexico City. Spanish traders established trading posts at the headwaters of the Rio Grande in this area in 1821 and by 1825 there were ten such posts along that river. In 1844 gold was discovered at Alamogordo which led to a stampede for it in January 1845 by over 20 thousand men prospecting for it near present-day Alamogordo; most of these men werelos mexicanos who had come West Indies to find gold rather than work on American farms or mines (the Mexican land grant system did not exist until AFTER Texas became republic). In 1861 Congress passed an act providing for statehood for New Mexico but no action was taken on it until December 12, 1912 when President Woodrow Wilson signed into law the ""New Mexico Constitution."" This document provided for major changes including division among nine congressional districts with each district electing three members instead of one member per state senate district with each senator being elected statewide; also newly created were representatives from Las Vegas Valley and Jemez Mountains regions plus two members from Dona Ana County whose region included parts now within El Paso County, Colorado A group led by Pascual Clouditts organized citizens to form a police force on November 4th, 1916 known as First National Police Force or "Pasqual Clouditts' Department." Sunland Park is located on the east bank of the Rio Grande, west of Farmington and south of Gallup. It is bordered by Farmington to the north, Silver City to the east, and Alamogordo to the south. Sunland Park has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cwa). The first European settlement in what is now Sunland Park was made by José Manuel Arpinés and his family on October 15, 1821 when they arrived from Rancho San Miguel de Allende in Veracruz, Mexico. The Arpinés family name comes from a mountain called "Huellas" which means "place where children play." The town was named after General James Halleck who fought in Mexican-American War as an officer for Ulysses S. Grant's army and later served as governor of New Mexico Territory under President Abraham Lincoln. Halleck's land grant included part of what are now Sunland Park and Clearwater County. The only building still standing in Sunland Park that dates back to its early days is the original courthouse which was built around 1849. After being destroyed by fire in 1895 it was rebuilt withFederal Gothic architecture by Ponce de Leon & Sons Builders Company under construction at what is now 505 N US Highway 80 near Interstate 10 about 2 miles east of downtown Sunland Park. It took until 1915 for SunilandPark's first school system to be built when State School Number 3 opened on Holladay Street between Seventh Street and Roosevelt Avenue; this school operated until 1927 when it was replaced by State School Number 5 which also operated until 1983 when it became known as Lamar High School In 1912 Sam Rayburn had his home built here which he used as office space for several years before returning to Texas during World War I In 1922 he donated land along US 95 North towards Gallup for a military airfield called Glenn Laughlin Field; this field eventually became known as Air Force Station Gallup . In 1951 an addition were made to local high school named Lamar Consolidated High School following consolidation of two other schools - First Presbyterian Senior High School (now Thornton) and Lamar Junior/Senior High School (now Donnellan Middle/High School). Sunlanders have been instrumental throughout their history with various businesses starting up including grocery stores such as Safeway, Kroger, Supervalu etc., doctor practices like Kaiser Permanente etc., post offices like United States Post Office #1 (now Trump International Golf Links), wedding planners like florists AAFRICA Weddings Inc., Gardenias Weddings Inc., etc., truck stops like California Truck Stop Co./Sunlander Truck stop LLC etc., car dealerships such as Cannonball Ford & Jeepney Chevrolet dealership etc.; most recently there has been development with an online retailer www.sunlandsunlimited.com active since 2007
