In addition to its namesake park which includes a playground and tennis courts as well as several buildings used for local government functions such as city hall and fire department headquarters, Sunland Park also includes several smaller parks throughout its rural setting.
Sunland Park was founded in 1911 by John F. Sun and his wife, Marguerite. The community developed around a small ranch that John F. Sun ran. In the early 1920s, the Sun family sold their ranch and moved to Albuquerque. They continue to live there until their death in 1951
