In Sunland Park, New Mexico, the town of about 12,000 people was home to a gun protection history that dates back to the 1800's. This action helped reduce gun violence in Sunland Park by 75%. illegal shooting ranges continue to be a problem today despite attempts by CCGV members to get rid of them through education, signage and public shaming campaigns

In 1902, Harry Chandler bought 1/4 acre (0.2 km²) of what would later become Sunland Park from John Wesley Powell and developed it into a small town with its own Post Office, grocery store and schoolhouse. Today's economy largely depends on agriculture; sunflowers are the primary crop followed by corn, beans and other vegetables. As well as providing services such as law enforcement and water supplies to surrounding villages, agricultural production has also helped contribute to Sunland Park's nickname "The Gilded Age Town". Some notable businesses in recent years have included The Gridiron Grill & Brewery which opened in 2007 and now provides local cuisine to customers throughout Pima County as well as parts of Arizona; The Lighthouse Tavern - a classic steak house that opened its doors in 2009 adjacent to Sunland Park High School; First National Bank - which had been open since 1907 when it merged with two other banks.; The Playground - an amusement park built in 2006 that features rides including a high-speed autorail coaster called "Raging Bull"; Drury Market Place - home to several locally owned shops including Stonington Threads & Needles Boutique; Summit Cement Company - which manufactures cements made from natural resources such as granite, limestone and coal};and Steele's Tire Store which reopened after being closed for more than two decades following a fire in 2001

Sunland Park is a city in the U.S. state of New Mexico. The population was 9,557 at the 2010 census, up from 7,527 in 2000. It is part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area and is located on the southern end of Albuquerque's east-west spine, lying between Interstate 25 and Rancho Santa Fe National Monument. Sunland Park straddles both sides of an ancient Puebloan cliff dwellings dating back to A.D. 1000 and has been home to Native American people since before European exploration began. The first Europeans to visit Sunland Park were Jesuit missionaries who founded the Mission San José de Atascadero in 1795 on what is now Main Street. In 1847, Juan Ortiz opened a small store near today's intersection of Broadway and Speedway Boulevard which became known as Ortiz's General Store. In 1898, when New Mexico became a U.S.–Mexico country under a treaty signed by President Zachary Taylor, Sunland Park become part of Congressman Lorenzo Thomas' Rancho Luna del Norte Mexican land grant which included much of present-day Sunland Park including parts of what are now Main Street and Speedway Boulevard
