Sunland Park is a small community located in the County seat of Taos, New Mexico. The community was founded by the Sanchez family in 1881. The town's first store opened in 1889 and it was called the Star of the West until 1903 when it changed its name to Sunland Park Store. In 1902, Mr. Joe Beame established the first grocery store in Sunland Park with four hundred pounds of groceries. In 1916, Daisy Bates started Sunland Park Elementary School which became one of the most successful schools in New Mexico. In 1947, Mrs. Daisy Bates donated land to build Sunland Park Community Center which has become one of the most popular venues for events throughout the year including concerts, dances and art exhibitions. The center is also home to SUNLAND PARK United Methodist Church which serves as an important part of local culture and history.
Sunland Park was founded in 1892 by J.L. Purdy and W.D. Patton as a cattle ranch on the east side of Sunland Lake, about 12 miles southeast of Alamogordo. The town growth started with the arrival of railroad passengers in the early 1900s, who used Sunland Park as a staging ground for their journey to Albuquerque and other destinations across New Mexico. The first school in Sunland Park was built in 1902, and later that year the town became a city under the name of Alamogordo. The population grew rapidly during World War I, when many local businesses bought military supplies from east coast suppliers. After the war ended, population growth slowed and few new buildings were built until around 1930 when an airfield was constructed at Sunland Park Airport and several new homes were erected along Main Street. In 1957, Sunland Park adopted its current name -Sunland Park Village- after being chosen as one of six villages in New Mexico selected to be part of the Communities Development Agency program which aimed to improve rural areas statewide. Today, Sunland Park is a vibrant community with active civic organizations including the Police Department, Fire Department, Chamber of Commerce and School District 2A; it has also become known for its Agricultural production (cattle ranchers still play an important role), water skiing and golfing opportunities available onsunilandparklake.,
