Sunland Park is a town in Nuevo León County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 4,591 at the 2010 census. It lies on the border of San Luis Potosi and Juárez Counties. The townsite was named for Sun Valley Ranch, which had been located there since 1872. The name "Sunland" came from a cowboy phrase meaning "highest ground." Sunland Park was founded in 1907 by John A. Moon and his family as a cattle ranch. By 1910, Sunland Park had become an agricultural community with several thousand acres of land irrigated using canals and ditches. The town's first store opened in 1911. In 1916, Sunland Park became the site of one of the most significant battles of World War I when its citizens fought against Mexican troops occupying their territory. In 1923, Sunland Park voters passed a resolution to annex neighboring Juárez County to create a new municipality that would be called Sunland Park 2222 (later renamed Alamosa). The annexation process took two years and resulted in the creation of Alamosa Township and Sunland Park Village within the newly created municipality boundaries. After World War II ended, many residents moved out of Sunland Park because it lacked natural resources such as oil wells or uranium mines: most residents were retirees who found work on nearby ranches or other businesses that continued to operate after the war ended. However, some immigrants who had come to America seeking opportunity continued to reside in SunLAND PARK through both post-war periods until they finally left during the late 1970s due to social unrest throughout much of Mexico following military dictatorships which suppressed civil liberties

Sunland Park is a small town in New Mexico, United States located on the east side of the Rio Grande. The population was 758 at the 2010 census. Sunland Park is part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Sunland Park were Spanish explorers who found it in 1540, and named it Huerta de la Vega de los Caballeros. In 1847, Manuel Antonio Gomez founded a ranch there after finding gold near Zacatecas. After American independence was won, General José Joaquín Morelos named Sunland Park Rancho Nuevo Alvarado y Luna in his honor. The name change occurred on November 16, 1848, when Mexico gained its independence from Spain and became an independent country called America under Mexican President Santa Anna. In 1870, John Wesley Powell discovered oil reserves at El Paso County.[2] When production began some years later, Sunland Park had to be built up because of the influx of people and materials needed for drilling and extracting oil. The town's first school opened in 1907,[3] and its first library opened in 1912.[4] Today many businesses are still active such as banks (five currently), grocery stores (seven currently), bars/pubs/nightclubs (eight currently), doctor's office (three currently) and more than twenty residences.[5] The first major event to take place in Sunland Park was when pioneer Tom Hanks set foot on Ute land on July 7th 1870 during his journey westward across New Mexico Territory into Arizona Territory; this event has been commemorated by a monument located at junction of US-505 & NM-60 about three miles south of downtown Sunland Park that features a bronze plaque reading "Tom Hanks - July 7th 1870" which now stands as a prominent landmark within town limits
