Summers are also very dry with little rain or snowfall. Sunland Park is located in the Mexican state of Chihuahua and was part of the Apachevs. The first white man to visit Sunland Park, Manuel Antonio Rivera, on February 6, 1877, reported that he found it "a nice place" but no one was living there. A post office was established at Sunland Park on July 1, 1881. The first school in Sunland Park was built in 1889 by Mrs. Gail Cates and operated as a girls’ school until 1912 when it became a boys’ school. In 1907, the Spanish-speaking community of Refugio moved to Sunland Park from San Angelo and opened a church There were also several small businesses in Sunland Park during this time including a grocery store and an auto shop. In 1922, Tom Mix bought part of the land that now forms Sunland Park from José Reyes for $10,000 and began to plan the development which would include 9 homes., 10 commercial buildings., a movie theater.,and two churches. The park opened to the public on November 17th, 1923 with all its original structures still standing today including the movie theater which can seat up to 800 people. A golf course was added to the park in 1951 and sunlanders started packing their picnics into what is now known as "the amphitheater." In 1978 an amusement park called Flamingo Downs open its doors followed by another amusement park called Zoomzoom Land & Waterpark in 1984 followed by Fiesta World theme park in 1995 before finally closing down in 2001 due to lack of funding.?
