He bought his own revolver which he kept at his home until 1920 when he joined the Albuquerque Police Department In 1911, sheriff's deputies were assigned to patrol duty within Sunland Park including night patrols and protection of public buildings On May 3rd 1913 an Automatic Pistol Ordinance (APO) went into effect making automatic pistols semiautomatic handguns The next year saw the opening of what is now called "the Gun Shop" located at 6001 FM 824 near Sunset Boulevard It became a popular spot for buying new firearms as well asrepairing old ones On November 10 th 1915 an ordinance stating that shotguns must have stocks above shoulder height went into effect

One such development was what is now known as "The City". This development took place around 1880 when James P.Sun built an industrial complex consisting of several tanneries and coal mine that quickly became one of the largest employers in Sunland Park. The City thrived until 1893 when James P.Sun sold it off for $10 million dollars to Harvey Mudd Company founder Houghton Mifflin.[3] Despite this sale, The City continued to be used as an important distribution center for eastern Albuquerque until 1924 when it closed down due to financial difficulties.[4] During World War II, many soldiers from New Mexico served across Europe on various fronts including North Africa and Italy where they met many local women who later married American servicemen[5]. Many local women were employed at munitions plants or shipyards throughout New Mexico during wartime,[6][7][8][9][10] helping contribute significantly To New Mexico's war effort[11]. After hostilities ended in 1945,[12], many servicemen returned home but many more remained stationed overseas[13]. Some notable military personnel who lived or workedin SunlandPark during wartime include retired General George Sabin,[14] Colonel Harry Truman (future president), Lieutenant Colonel Edward Rucker (founder of Texaco), Major General Dave Tidorn (commandant of Fort Bliss), Admiral William Leahy (headquarters commander Mediterranean Theater Allied Expeditionary Force) In 1951-1952a new high school opened called Jemez Hills High School which replaced nearby Roosevelt High School which had Closing Down because Ofchequipment Issues
Sunland Park was founded in 1887 by J.D. Parker and James H. McMurry as a cattle ranch on the east bank of the Rio Grande. The present-day town was organized in 1912, when it was annexed by Sunland Park from Socorro, New Mexico. The first post office in Sunland Park was established in 1912, and the first store opened its doors in 1914. The town experienced some growth during World War II, with the construction of airfields nearby giving rise to a large population increase. However, economic decline followed World War II and Sunland Park declined thereafter. In the 1970s and 1980s, however, there has been an effort to revive the town economy through various forms of marketing including tourism and agriculture. Today, Sunland Park is a small community with a strong cultural focus that offers several unique attractions such as its golf course which is one of the most challenging in New Mexico; its community center which features a theater and museum; and its wide variety of restaurants and businesses that offer both local cuisine and international cuisine options
