The town's main street was named Main Street because it ran parallel to United States Route 66. In 1912, the Sherman family sold their interest in the cattle ranch to Pancho Villa for $10,000 cash. Villa used his new wealth to help develop Sunland Park into a major agricultural center with several thousand acres of land Agricultural Land Act (AAA) Class II soil which he could sell at high prices to farmers. Villa also built multiple homes in Sunland Park and donated them to New Mexico State College for women as an affordable educational opportunity for women students. The AAA Class II soil is still present in many parts of Sunland Park today and has helped make this community one of the most agriculturally prosperous in New Mexico
The Sunland Park area was settled by the Spanish in the early 1800s. The first white person to arrive in what is now Sunland Park was David C. Wells, who came in 1879. He built a cabin on the site of what is now the Sunland Park Library and School. In 1907, John Sibley started a dry goods store in Sunland Park. In 1916, he built the first post office in Sunland Park. The Post Office building still stands today and can be seen from Highway 64 near Sheridan Road. In 1951, Dick Cheney graduated from high school here and started working at Enron as a research analyst before becoming Vice President of United States under George W Bush in 2001. The town of Sunland Park was incorporated on July 1, 1951. It included areas north of Sheridan Road including parts ofSunland Heights and Silverado Hills (now part of Carlsbad).
