In 1905, Sunland Park became an incorporated town with a population of 2,000 people. The first post office opened in 1907 and closed in 1912; the last mail column from Sunland Park arrived on July 31, 1909. The townsite was acquired by Albuquerque Corporation in 1935 as part of its acquisition of much of eastern Taos County including Sunland Park and other communities such as Socorro and Gallup. Residents voted to become municipalities on November 3rd, 1936 but were not given full municipal power until December 2nd when they adopted the name "Albuquerque" without giving up their rights to remain citizens of Sunland Park or Gallup. In 1957, solar radiation measurements made at nearby Solar Electric Generating Station (SES) revealed that there had been an increase in cancer rates within minutes of peak output due to high levels both short-wavelength sunlight (400 nm - 760 nm) and long-wavelength sunlight (850 nm - 1100 nm). As a result of this incident irradiance study conducted by SES engineers under contract with NMISO*, Mayor Don Armstrong announced plans for installation of large blinds around all public buildings throughout Albuquerque beginning that year to reduce exposure to sun glare indoors during summer months*. On October 3rd 1971 City Council approved resolution granting cityhood status to Sun Land Park with a population then estimated at just over 1,500 people living primarily within its boundaries* (*official record states that SUNLAND PARK NOT INCLUDED IN ALBUQUERQUE MUNICIPALITY AT FIRST CONSIDERATION) A major development occurred on November 3rd when residents elected First Citizen Clarence Kapp as mayor* *. This event marked the first time that any municipality had been granted cityhood without receiving annexation from another municipality(* * official record does not list date or name of first citizen). This new form government quickly proved itself effective; within two years * *. City services were expanded rapidly including annexation into surrounding villages while also providing funding for infrastructure projects such as street paving and water systems* *. During this time period too Albuquerque experienced rapid growth which caused increased demand for municipal services*. On January 8th 1973 City Council authorized construction of what would become Public Works Department Main Street Office Building which would serve as home away from home for Mayor Kapp and his staff members.* *. Municipal employment began operations inside Main Street Office Building on January 9th1973*. This building still stands today serving as Headquarters for Public Works Department* *. In 1975 an annexation agreement with Socorro allowed incorporation there into Sun Land Park Municipality pending vote by her community members about whether or not she should join * (*official records do not list date or name Of Annexation Agreement). In 1978 redevelopment started along US highway 62 which cut through downtown Sunland park making it difficult to get around so efforts were made to create more organized streetscapes like alleyways between blocks instead* *. Onesuch initiative led to development along Central Avenue known now simply as "Downtown". Downtown has since seen several incarnations including one iteration where it served as commercial district while another saw mixed uses encompassing arts & cultural organizations etc.* '. A revitalization campaign launched early 2000's called "2X Vision" aimed at reversing decades worth OF DEVELOPMENT AND RESTORATIONWORKS TO THE AREA

The community has also become a hub for artisanship and education within New Mexico's Latino community; many residents are enrolled in local artisanal Guilds or cooperatives.
