Sunland Park is a small town in New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census. It is part of the El Paso–New Mexico Metropolitan Statistical Area. Sunland Park is located on the border of Doña Ana County and Pascua Villa County. The first Europeans to visit Sunland Park were Spanish Franciscan missionaries who arrived in 1692. They named the area San Fernando de las Animas after Saint Francis Xavier, but it was not until 1827 that they built a small chapel here. In 1864, James McGregor bought land from José Antonio Sánchez and erected a log cabin called "McGregor's Rancho de la Trinidad". In 1886, J.H. White purchased 160 acres (70 hectares) of land for $2 per acre from Mission Santa Fe railroad engineer Manuel Miranda y Arellano and built a flour mill, tannery, brewery and other businesses here known as White's Mill Ruins today. The name "Sunland" was given to this place by white people because it resembled the sun in color! In 1912, Averell Harriman donated some land east of White's Mill Ruins to build Sunland Park High School which opened its doors in 1916. In 1927 Don Ewing donated an addition to Sunland Park High School which became known as East High School; it still stands today (2008). When Don Ewing died in 1961 his wife provided financial support for East High School until 1990 when it became defunct due to lack of students enrolling there each year!
