On July 22, 1889, three shots were fired into a building in Sunland Park while people were inside. The building sustained only minor damage and no one was injured. These shootings are believed to be related to feuding between families or groups of friends. In 1898, three gunshots were fired at night into an apartment complex near town center by individuals who thought someone was home- all injuries resulted in non-life threatening injuries. In 1932 shots were fired out of curiosity into an open window along Main Street by Mrs. Hazel Ketchum after she found out her son had shared her daughter's bedroom without asking and his room overlooked hers (the window still stands today). No one was injured and it is presumed that these shots may have been accidental fireworks discharge from around town due to Improvised Explosive Devices concerns during that time period (IEs). The last known shooting took place on November 5th 1948 when five rounds were fired from a .30 caliber rifle at Yuma County Sheriff's Office Headquarters just south of town limits after officers responded to reports of erratic behavior by several citizens adjacent to the headquarters property (later determined not to be terrorism related). Outcome? No casualties reported but speculation exists that one or more rounds hit an unidentified house/person behind vehicle resulting in injury which wasn't immediately reported due fears for further retaliation against law enforcement presence within community; however this theory has yet to be verified

In 1916, Sunland Park had its first fire when a barn caught on fire during a thunderstorm. The townspeople responded by setting up an open-airocaust to extinguished all available fires within two hours. Sunland Park is home to several shopping malls including: Sunlands Mall (opened 1993), Palace Mall (opened 1999), Cottonwood Plaza (opened 2009) and North Las Cruces Center mall (opened 2013). There are also several smaller retailers located throughout the town center including Dollar General (since 1978), Super 8 Motel (since 1984), Pueblo Mercado Mexican Grill & Cantina (since 1994), Hooters restaurant (opened 1990) and T-Fal restaurant(founded 1996).
