Sunland Park is a small town in New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,824 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque-Municipality. Sunland Park is adjacent to the city of Albuquerque and is served by the Sunland Park School District. Sunland Park was founded in 1907 by ranchers George Waddell and John Hildebrandt. It became a town in 1912 when it incorporated as a municipality. The first post office opened in Sunland Park on May 8, 1912. The first housing development in Sunland Park was called "The Gables". It consisted of two blocks of single-family homes built between 1923 and 1927 by developer Clarence Hite. In 1933, the City Council passed an ordinance making it an election precinct for all candidates for municipal offices outside of Albuquerque within three months after their election results were announced; this law was later renamed "Suniland Parks Election Law". The first mayoral races were held under this system on November 3, 1933: George Larkin won with over 50% of the vote while Hiram Johnson received only 21%. An amendment to the New Mexico Constitution proposed changing the name from "New Mexico" to "Albuquerque" on November 6, 1959; however, that proposal failed to pass due to opposition from local businesses and political leaders who felt that Albuquerque would be more advantageous geographically speaking than Sunland Park given its proximity to both cities'. A new shopping mall called Gateway Plaza was planned for near downtown Albuquerque but never built due to funding concerns from developers; instead, Gateway South anchored by Macy's opened in 2001 across from Gateway Plaza. Today there are few inhabitants living within Sunland park limits as most residents commute into Albuquerque or Gallup for jobs or pleasure activities including nightlife options available in those towns etc... sunlanders have taken up farming as their primary occupation because they do not have access to good land elsewhere
