After Spain withdrawal from New Mexico in 1660, Englishman John D’Ancona claimed what is now northeast New Mexico for France in 1697 under Treaty Of Paris following their victory at Alamo Hill 2 years earlier. French traders soon discovered sizable deposits of copper and other minerals in what is today northeast New Mexico; they named this territory Franciscan Land after Prince Francisco de la Cueva y Atanasio who had accompanied them on their exploration into this area during 1699-1704 expedition led by Captain Don Fernando de Oñate Alonso y Costilla. The Spanish Crown ceded all but 6 square miles (15 km²) to France upon its independence from Spain in 1821; all remaining land became known as Mexican Territorial Provisions District No 5 where Sunland Park now stands patrolled by Mexican Marines until 1912 when it became a federal reservation administered jointly by both nations under Indian Cattle Act provisions granted primarily to Inca/Pima Apache tribes living westward along narrow stripsaddling the Santa Fe River Valley which then lay within Mexican National Domain lying between Arizonan Borderlands eastward to Arizona Presidencia grants including parts now comprising southeasternNew MexicoChihuahua StateProvince until 1880s Juan Altamontanchi purchased much or allof present day southwesternNewMexicoAlbuquerque City Limits plus portions east & southwesterlyof Rio Grande CityFlorida County limits forming present day Phoenix metropolitan area
