A year later Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto discoveredANDAlbuquerque on July 28, 1541 while exploring southeast New Mexico Territory. In 1875 Spanish entrepreneur Fernando Romero founded the town site near what is now Albuquerque while still living in Santa Fe County in order to gain access to good grazing lands for his cattle ranchos along Rio Grande del Norte east of Santa Fe City limits then remote from human habitation by way onlyof open country over 4 square miles () today's northeast corner (northwest side) and southwest quarter (southwest corner) geographically former east side or west side (southeast corner). Today's southern border line between Sunland Park and Albuquerque straddles Sandy Hook Road where I-25 crosses it just south of Buffalo Gap National Monument (). Sunland Park was founded in 1907 by J.N.C. Boyd and his wife, Belle Boyd. The town grew rapidly during the 1910s and 1920s as a result of the newly developed oil field on the nearby Mesa Verde National Monument. Businesses such as meatpacking, grocery stores, and hotels were established in Sunland Park after World War I ended; the population reached 10,000 by 1925. The Depression led to a decline in business activity and population; however, Sunland Park still retained its name and status as a commercial center until the mid-1930s when it became an agricultural community due to increased production at the oil field. The last resident died in 1964.
