The Silver City Arsenal was established in 1892 by Ignacio Villa and his father, Manuel Villa. The Arsenal produced weapons for the Mexican army and other law enforcement agencies. It has been mentioned that the Villa family owned the arsenal until 1938 when it was bought by George Latimer who continued to operate it until his death in 1984. In 1938, ownership of the Silver City Arsenal passed through to José Gomez, who operated it until 1951 when it was purchased by John A. MacNamara Sr., a local rancher and metalsmith. In 1961, MacNamara sold the arsenal to Don Freeman, a local banker and gunsmith who continued to operate it until 1978 when it was sold to Harry Wirths, a labor contractor and arms dealer. In 1984, Wirths donated the arsenal to New Mexico State University where they maintain it as an educational resource today.

Silver City, New Mexico is a town in the US state of New Mexico. The population was 5,362 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Doña Ana County. The Rio Grande forms the town's eastern border and its west border is defined by the Jemez Mountains. Silver City was founded in 1847 by American prospectors who were looking for silver ore near today's Las Cruces, New Mexico. The silver mines at Comal and San Miguel d'Alamo closed in 1886 and 1889 respectively, but continue to be worked occasionally as small open-pit mines are located in nearby mountains. Since its founding, Silver City has been a center of commerce and culture for Doña Ana County. The first post office was established in 1847, and soon developed into a busy trade center with an extensive mercantile sector that included stores such as Pecos Bank and Hidalgo Furniture Company. In addition to its commercial activities, Silver City also played an important role in political life during its early years; both public meetings were held here until shortly before Mexican independence from Spain was declared in 1821. After Mexican independence was secured, however, business dwindled as people turned their attention to more securely situated trading posts farther down the river system. However, it wasn't until after World War II that Silver City regained some of its former prominence as an economic center within Doña Ana County; beginning with the construction of Interstate 10 through town in 1951–1952 led to increased traffic and development around the old mining sites along what is now I-10 Eastbound lanes (the old Indian Road). Today much of this activity takes place outside of downtown Silver City on smaller streets adjacent to newer businesses which have arisen around I-10's exit 4A off Interstate 10 eastward into neighboring Apache County
