Silver City is a small town located in the Monterrey region of New Mexico. The population was 5,647 at the 2010 census. The town is named after the silver mines which have been located here since 1858. The mines are now inactive, but their remains can be seen throughout Silver City. The first silver mine in Silver City was opened in 1858 by James Dolan and his partners. By 1886, nine other companies had entered into mining contracts with Dolan and his partners. By 1912, there were twenty-one mines operating within the boundaries of Silver City. In 1922, two more silver Mines were opened in nearby Ciudad Juárez and these operations continued until 1949 when all of thesilvermininginNewMexicobegantocome to an end due to high production costs and competition from outside sources. Today, much of what used to be housed within the abandoned buildings of the old silver mines can still be found scattered throughout Silver City including parts of the Post Office building (1861), Bank of America Building (1902), Masonic Temple (1890), and several other businesses such as Hidalgo Hardware (1899) and Peralta's Provision Store (1910). There are also numerous quarries located throughout Silver City that contribute to its unique architecture including one built specifically for shaped blocks of lead called "The Lead Pit". However, by 1970, Silver City had lost its status as an important commercial center and its population had shrunk to 5500 people. In 2001, Silver City was renamed after Francisco Aguilar y Gasset who served as Mayor from 1949-1955 and 1955-1960
