Whensilver prices began to rise rapidly during World War II because supplies were running short, numerous businesses were established around town including: a movie theater (the Republic), banks (First National Bank and Trust Company and US Bank), cotton mills (Cotton Mills Corporation), auto parts stores (Plymouth Motors Inc.), radio stations KLAS-AM and KNUB-FM (now KNUE) as well as other types of businesses typical for small towns at that time like tourism attractions such as an amusement park operated by Globe Life Park Co., dairy production by White Sands Creamery and Frito-Lay operations like Fritos' Red Mill are still present today some taking on new forms while others have been replaced by newer equivalents."
