At that time, Silver City was one of the most prosperous towns in New Mexico and its residents were able to purchase a variety of firearms. One of the most common handguns in Silver City at that time was the revolver. One of the earliest revolvers manufactured in Silver City was the Colt .45. It was made between 1857 and 1861 and was used by both law enforcement officers and civilians. The Colt .45 eventually became one of America's most popular handguns. Another popular handgun in silver city during this time period was the Smith & Wesson Model 686. This firearm was first produced between 1892 and 1899 and it became very popular among law enforcement officers as well as civilian users. There are also three school districts that serve Silver City: District #1 which covers most of downtown; District #2 which includes portions of west side hills overlooking downtown; and District #3 which encompasses parts east side hills overlooking downtown. The city has several parks including Mission Park which contains a large lake used for swimming and boating; Coyote Hills Park near railroad tracks on the east side; Riverview Park near river on west side; White Sands Missile Range park on reclaimed land adjacent to rancho san jose de la Mesa missile range complex;and North Indian Schoolhouse Museum adjacent to library

Silver City is a town in Taos County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,872 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern bank of the Rio Grande and has an elevation of 697 feet (195 m). The founder of Silver City, José Antonio Pacheco, named it after silver mines in Potosi Spain that were discovered in 1786. At first, miners used Spanish equipment to extract silver from the mountainsides. In 1824, American prospectors discovered gold in what is now Silver City. The commercial development started with the construction of a sawmill and gristmill in 1827. By 1830 there were twelve stores and two hotels in town. The discovery of more silver and gold led to increased production and by 1840 there were fifteen stores and four hotels in town. In 1846-47 Anglo-American miner James Goldsmith organized a stampede into Silver City that resulted in over 200 men dying; this event helped spur development around town for mills, shops, schools and churches. During the Mexican–American War (1847-48), skirmishes occurred between Ulysses S Grant's army and Francisco Villa's forces northwest of town; these skirmishes likely did not result in any serious damage or casualties to either side due to lack of infantry support close enough to intervene. In 1849 silver prices collapsed as supplies ran low due to English investors' investments elsewhere; however local mining operations continued until 1865 whensilver began becoming available again globally following Chinese investment which stimulated new exploration throughout much of North America including Silver City where it resumed production by 1870
The Silver City area was founded by the Spanish in 1680 as a small settlement on the Rio Grande. It grew rapidly, becoming one of the most important Mexican settlements in New Mexico. The town had a population of over 30,000 by 1824 and became an important center for trade and commerce. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, silver was discovered in nearby Zacatecas and Silver City began to grow quickly as mines were developed. By 1850, the town had reached its peak population size with over 100 residents. However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), Silver City was destroyed by Confederate forces under General Don Carlos Buell. The town never recovered and fell into disrepair until it was abandoned in 1920.
