The city continued to grow as an agricultural center during this time; some of the most important crops grown here include wheat, corn, cotton, and hay. In 1912 silver production started again at the old Frio Mine; however, it eventually closed because of low prices for silver ore. Silver City's fortunes changed after World War II when two large aluminum smelters were built here: Alcoa Silver Corporation (now PSA) in 1951 and United States Aluminum Company (UAC) in 1958. These smelters produced significant amounts of aluminum that made Silver City one of America's major industrial cities during that time period. However, these industries have since declined and today only employs a few hundred people within downtown boundaries

However, it has continued to grow since then as a tourist destination for people looking for picturesque villages such as Santa Fe or Durango.
