Silver City is a town in the U.S. state of New Mexico, located on the Rio Grande about 25 miles (40 km) south of Page and 30 miles (48 km) north of Alamogordo. The population was 1,866 at the 2010 census. The name Silver City likely comes from silver ore mined in nearby hillsides. The first post office in this area was established in 1868, and by 1880, there were six settlements here: Antelope Hill, Black Mesa, Bloomfield Hills, Brownsville, Gadsden Heights, and Silver City. It didn't take long for these little towns to become quite busy with miners coming to prospect for silver ore along the riverbanks and on the flatlands surrounding them. The first white settler in what is now Silver City was Leland Drinkwater who arrived there around 1885. He came from Arroyo Grande and started out as a farmhand but soon became interested in mining silver along the river banks near his home. By 1902 he had founded one of the earliestmining companies here – Drinkwater & Company – which continued to produce silver until its bankruptcy in 1909. A young man named Harry Emerson Fenton set up shop here around 1916 when he found small quantities of silver while prospecting near Bloomfield Hills; this discovery led him to start Eagle Mine (later known as Empire Mine), one of New Mexico's most famous silver mines that produced over 20 million ounces of gold during its heyday between 1901-1964! In 1922 Fenton sold his company to George Hutton who renamed it Anglo Ore Corporation later that year; Anglo Ore continued production until 1986 when it merged with Nucor Corporation to form Nucor Minerals Incorporated! Today much of Anglo Ore Corp.'s property continues to be owned by both Nucor Minerals Incorporated and Nucor Holdings LLC which includes properties including Silver City where it still employs many people today! Although small at first, SilverCity quickly grew into a thriving community thanks largely to its significant contributions both militarily and economically to Rice County during World War I and II. During those years Gold Rush fever swept through neighboring counties so urgently seeking placer gold that communities such as Gallup sprang up all over New Mexico Territory eager serve their new neighbors – Roma being only one example! And so it was no surprise when during World War II Silver City emerged as an important base camp for manyof America's top engineers working on war-related projects such as dams across the river below; or when David Sanger opened up Old Fort Sill National Monument right next door just two years after Pearl Harbor! With all these boom times came also more violence associated with early stage metal mining activities: fires often broke out among workingmen baking freshsilver coins onto pieces of metal used for coinsurance premiums ornaments etc.; accidents occurred frequently when men tryingto break open old mines using axes instead of picks or shovels got stuck inside suddenly discovering they were deep underground – sometimes resulting in fatalities!! But despite these occasional hardships life went on pretty much unaffected – until 1951when fire destroyed almost everything within town limits leaving virtually nothing standing except some ancient adobe buildings perched precariously atop a hilltop! This hard hit town quickly recovered under new leadership though never completely regained its former glory; nevertheless it remains an important partof Rice County history having seen several major changes since then including becoming an incorporated city within our borders following incorporation efforts spearheaded by Mayor Greg Floyd back in 2006!!!

This period marked an era for growth for Silver City with new businesses founded and many jobs created throughout the city center! Today,SilverCity continues to be an important cultural and commercial center for southeastern New Mexico as well as a major regional center for trade within southwestern New Mexico and northwestern Colorado
