Santa Fe, New Mexico, is a city in south-central New Mexico. The population was 509 as of the 2010 census, making it the ninth most populous city in the state. It is part of the Albuquerque metropolitan area and is bordered by Santa Fe County to the east and north, Doña Ana County to the west, and Haskell County to the south. Santa Fe has a rich history dating back over 350 years. The first European settlers in what is now Santa Fe were Spanish Conquistadors who founded San Miguel de Allende on November 16th, 1610. In 1834 SantaFe was named after Father Simon Bolivar Chávez y Guevara who had been elected president of Peru that year. From 1868 until 1912 it was under Mexican rule; then it became an Anglo-American community governed by a mayor and five council members accountable to voters through Proposition T (1892). On February 14th 1912 President Woodrow Wilson signed Executive Order 10408 which announced that all Mexican citizens living in New Mexico would be allocated their own individual ballots for election to local office; this opened up much social and political activity which continued until 1940 when many Mexicans left for Arizona because of fear of being deported. In 2006 Mayor Richard Berryman declared December 25th "SantaFe's Day" in order to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and promote cultural awareness about Santa Fe's Mexican heritage as well as its importance within American culture overall. Many businessesboycott Thanksgiving dinner services out of respect for City Hall's decision while some parents choose not to send their children into public schools on that day due to concerns about religious messages being taught during class time

Santa Fe, New Mexico is a city in the US state of New Mexico, located in the Santa Fe Valley on the east side of the Rio Grande. The population was 97,253 as of 2010. Santa Fe has been called "the bread and butter of New Mexico" because its economy depends heavily on agriculture and ranching. The city's nickname is "The Gateway to Albuquerque." A Towne Site was discovered by Franciscan missionaries in 1540 near what is now downtown Santa Fe. In 1692, Don Francisco de Alvarado granted land grants to a group of settlers led by Antonio de Ulloa. These grants included a town site on San Miguel Creek known as La Barranca, which became the nucleus for modern day Santa Fe. In 1847, don José Núñez del Valle donated land to the Mexican government for an agricultural colony called Rancho Bernardo del Apache y Pavón; this colony failed due to harsh weather conditions and lack of attention from Mexican authorities. A new attempt was made in 1849 with the construction of la Trinidad (later renamed Monterey) fortress/city complex; however this project also failed due to bad planning and engineering workmanship. In 1850–51 Father Ignacio López decided that it would be more practical and efficient to build churches in central SantaFe instead of farther out on Rancho Bernardo del Apache y Pavón; so he began construction on Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria Parish Church (1851), Nuestra Señora de las Merced Parish Church (1853), Nuestra Señora de los Presbíteros Parish Church (1855), Santísima Trinidad Parish Church (1856), San Pedro Rey Municipal Cathedral (1857) – all within two years’ time! This dramatic building spree helped Toon Klaasen become Mayor pro tempore for the first time in history when he took office November 3rd, 1857 after being elected at-large from among voting citizens! New Mexico's capital and largest city is Santa Fe, which was founded in 1777 by Spain. The area around Santa Fe had been inhabited by Native Americans for thousands of years before the arrival of Spanish colonists. The Mission Santa Fé was founded in 1763 by Father Francisco de Miranda, who served as the first bishop of New Mexico. The city grew rapidly during the 19th century, thanks to its location near the transcontinental Pony Express route and its role as a cultural center for Hispanic America. In 1846, Santa Fe was renamed Las Vegas after Nevada's then-governor Stephen Kearny.
