In 1846, Santa Fe was the capital of New Mexico and it had a population of over 20,000 people. The then-new United States government decided to establish a new capital in this large and important center of the country. Santa Fe was chosen as the new capital because it was an ideal location for an antislavery society to be founded and it also offered hope for peace in what seemed to be a tumultuous time. The first governor of New Mexico, James Wickersham, arrived in Santa Fe on March 15th of that year with his forces. He quickly set about establishing order and making preparations for the coming war with Spain. Soon after, Wickersham’s forces were joined by those from neighboring Pecos County, who helped him build Fort Craig on April 6th. The fort served as the provisional headquarters for New Mexico during the early years of its existence as a republic. Meanwhile, back at Fort Craig, Governor Wickersham began construction on another important facility: the state prison known today as Chisum Barracks. Thisprisoner-of-war camp operated from 1847 until 1861 when it was abandoned due to sanitary problems. However, part of it still stands today and is open to visitors throughguided tours every day from 9am to 3pm (except Sundays). On October 14th of that year – just one week after SantaFe had become the permanent capital – Commodore James Cook sailed into San Miguel Bay on his USS Constitutionand becamethe first European person evertoset foot on American soil! His visit marked a turning point in American history and introduced many Californians to what they would call “New Mexican culture” later on in their lives….

The Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office holster history can be traced back to 1892. At that time, the office was located in Pueblo de Ciudad Juarez and wore a type of holster known as a "pinto." In 1907, the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office adopted a new design for their holsters which used an updated version of the Colt Army Pistol. From 1912 to 1940, the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office continued to use Colt pistols as their primary weapon. In 1940, they switched to Beretta pistols. The department stopped using handguns in 1978. Today, the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office still uses Colt pistols as their primary weapon choice.

The population of SantaFe increased rapidly following its incorporation as a city under municipal law on December 15, 1865; it reached 1,500 residents by 1880. Antonio López Girón served as mayor from 1886 until his death in 1893; he was succeeded by his brother Nicolás Girón. The late 1800s were difficult times for Albuquerque after its annexation into Albuquerque City in 1912; business failures and political unrest caused joblessness and social instability throughout much of Albuquerque's downtown core during this time period. However, some businesses thrived such as Cimarron Glass Works which manufactured windows for buildings throughout Northern New Mexico during this time period On September 26th 1905 Mayor Nicolás Girón declared "Albuquerque Is On Fire"after an attack against a store located near Central Avenue that left three people dead and eleven injured including five policemen who were also wounded After months of planning orchestrated by Assistant Police Chief José Lupiena with input from top elected officials including Mayor Girón and City Manager John Hinchcliffe local business owners pooled their money together to purchase two shotguns used in the shooting at Supermarket Safeway located at 5th Street Northeast & Central Avenue with plans to shoot back if needed
