Santa Fe is one of those towns where you can feel like you are living history because it has been around since before your grandparents could remember! One interesting tidbit about Santa Fe – it has been home to many famous people including President George Washington (1789-1837) who stayed there while on his way from Monterey to Virginia; General Tomás Romero y Arellano (1809-1884), who served as Governor general during Mexican War I; Patricio Carranza (1896-1946), leader of Dirty War against United States advisors during World War II; José Vasconcelos (1920-1996), presidente de facto duopoly between left wing Peronist party & right wing Nationalist party after military coup d'état attempted against him; actor Don Ameche (1911-1992) who filmed episodesof TV series such as "Cheers" here while also performing at local theaters; singer Willie Nelson (brought over from Texan cattle drives in 1940) and current Mayor Bernadette Martinez have all lived here some time or other!
