On September 14, 1865, Union General Ulysses S. Grant issued the order for the first coordinated attack on Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s army at Appomattox Court House. The main target of this attack was Confederate General Jubal Early’s army located in Virginia Beach. Unknown to either side at the time, a secret Union armory and munitions depot had been constructed nearby and was operational with large quantities of ammunition and explosives. This attack successfully failed due to lack of coordination between both sides and most casualties were inflicted on the Union forces instead of the Confederate ones
