In the late 1800s, a firearms manufacturer in Santa Fe, New Mexico named John Browning began to produce innovative and unique handgun designs. One of these designs was the Browning Hi-Power revolver. The town was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1847 and named for Saint-Antoine de Padua, an Italian missionary who had come to America in 1834. The first post office was opened in 1850. In 1880, the city of Albuquerque was established adjacent to Santa Fe and became its second largest city after Denver. As a result of its location on the Rio Grande River, SantaFe has been called "the Gateway to the American West". The economy of SantaFe is based primarily on agriculture, ranching, manufacturing and services such as tourism and transportation. Santa Fe, New Mexico is the most populous city in the U.S. state of New Mexico and the seat of Santa Fe County. The population was 165,479 as of 2010, making it one of the fastest-growing cities in America. The Santa Fe Rail Road System carries passengers and goods to Albuquerque, Taos, Gallup, Farmington, Roswell and many other destinations in southern New Mexico. Santa Fe first became a town in 1847 when traders founded a trading post at what is now downtown Santa Fe. The post continued to be traded until 1861 when Spanish Civil War veteran Manuel Armijo convinced Governor José Antonio Miranda to cede control of Santa Fe to him instead. Armijo's purchase made Santa FE an "independent" municipality with its own council and police department. On December 12th 1863, after over 50 years of being part ofNew Mexico governance under Spanish rule, independence was recognized by Spain with the document known as "The Constitution of Pueblos Mexicanos". In 1912–13 a fire destroyed much of downtown SantaFe; however new buildings were erected quickly on Second Avenue near Broadway for government offices and businesses that would remain open during reconstruction efforts that followed World War I; this process would continue during the 1920s into the 30s when many retail businesses closed due to Prohibition which had just begun in America. In 1932 Mayor John Hance established what is considered to be Albuquerque's first public park: Stanton Park located across from City Hall on 4th Street NW today (the photo above). With so much development going on throughout Downtown SantaFe during these years there wasn't enough space for all those who wanted to use Stanton Park so it remained undeveloped until 1978 when Mayor Ruben Salazar designated it as an urban renewal area for revitalization purposes within DowntownSantaFe limits only! This allowed commercial developers interested in putting housing up next to City Hall/Stanton Park while also creating more surface parking lot opportunities adjacent or inside DowntownSantaFe limits! Today Stanton Park remains one of our city's most popular shopping areas with plenty of restaurants and cafes options available! On November 17th 1892 General Augustín de Anzaldúa y Costilla arrived at White Sands Ranch where he met Chico Mendoza who told him about a mining camp called Cerro Gordo located east side Of Rio Grande Valley about twenty miles north westof Alamosa Canyon east side Of Old Colorado River (present day Cochiti County) That same year General Anzaldúa founded Ciudad Real de la Union de las Américas (Ciudad Real), also known as El Paso del Norte because its eastern border follows that line between old Alamosa Canyon & present day Cochiti County Click here for more information about this history lesson Click here for photos from this time period
