There are many gun sights that have been in use throughout the Santa Fe area for years. One of the earliest and most well-knowngun sights was a large white target that could be seen from miles away. The first site to place a gun sight on a tree in this region was at Bushnells Ranch, north of town. In 1871, George A. Smith and his brother-in-law, James E. Bushnell, started Bushnell's rifle factory in what is now northeast Albuquerque. They began manufacturing rifles and shotguns there and soon became one of the leading firearms manufacturers in the United States. Over time, they made more than twenty different types of gunsights and sights, including several models that were designed specifically for use with rifle barrels over .50 caliber. One of these early rifles was the Model UZI (Universal Gun Sight), which featured an adjustable rear sight with a 100 yard range capability and three clicks for windage or elevation adjustments. It was used by US military forces during World War I as part of an effort to improve sniper accuracy. Bushnell's company continued makingguns until it merged with Winchester Repeating Arms Company in 1923 to become Winchester Firearms Corporation. This company continued making various typesof firearms until it merged with Colt Manufacturing Company in 1960 to become Colt Industries Incorporated (CIP). This company manufactured pistols, revolvers, shotguns, ammunition,etc., until it too merged into American Pistol Corp./National Arms Co./Browning handgun corporation in 1987.) The original White TargetGunsight still remains located at Bushnells Ranch today - visitors can view it from outside their property gates!
