The city was founded on February 14th, 1865 by Judge Augustus Fenton with $4,000 from local citizens John Prentiss and Archibald Wright. As part of a land grant from President Abraham Lincoln to Colonel James Wickersham, Fenton acquired all of present-day mesa County including what are now Santa Fe City and Anadarko Nation lands east of the Colorado River. The city's location made it an important commercial center for gold seekers who rafted downriver to Zacatecas or Bisbee during California's Gold Rush because there were no ferry services between Albuquerque and Santa Fe at that time. The construction of Interstate 40 followed soon after Operation Crossroads: on November 16th 1969 (the date which marks the centennial anniversary of America's entry into World War I), Interstate 40 was routed through downtown SantaFe as a direct response to concerns about crime rates among Mexican immigrants living near I-40 corridor while also serving as an opportunity to increase tourism revenue for both cities along with improving public safety measures within both areas; expanding I-40 further into eastern mesa County served as another goal(s) for downtown SantaFe planners circa 1990s onward until its cessation in 2009 due largely to budgetary constraints brought about by economic recession throughout much of Western New Mexico landscape consequent high levels of poverty/lessness amongst Native American & Hispanic communities adjacent Mexicoland Corridor
