Santa Fe is a city in New Mexico, and the capital of Santa Fe County. The population was 120,819 at the 2010 census. The current mayor is Susana Martinez. The site of present-day Santa Fe was first settled by Spanish colonists in 1699 as part of an attempt to establish a central point on the southern frontiers of New Mexico. The city's founding took place on December 24, 1785, when Governor Don José de Urrea founded it as La Paz de los Estados Unidos Mexicanos (La Paz for American States), after his victory over Spanish forces at San Miguel el Viejo in 1785. Despite this growth, however, Santa Fe faced periodic financial difficulties that inhibited its ability to maintain infrastructure or replace aging buildings. Nonetheless, Santa Fé continued to grow through various incorporations of adjacent villages until 1847 when it reached its current size; by then it had become an important cultural center throughout what is now northwestern New Mexico due largely to its strong relationships with Albuquerque and Taos County—two regions which were rapidly becoming Hispanicized following waves of immigration from Europe during the late 19th century. Santiago de Nuestra Señora de la Purísima Concepción, commonly known as Santa Fe (Spanish: Santiagua; Nahuatl: Teotihuacán;chi: Chiapas), is a city in New Mexico and the seat of Taos County. The first European to visit what is now New Mexico was Francisco Vásquez de Coronado on November 16, 1537, while exploring the area for Spain's northern expansion. The history of SantaFe dates back to 1500 B.C., when people from Mesoamerica settled in what is now this area. By A.D. 1000, Maya town El Mirador had grown up on an acropolis overlooking present-day downtown Santa Fe due to its strategic location near two important trade routes linking Central America with Chilé and Tenochtitlan—the former home of the Aztec empire and later Mexico City. In 1912–13 archeological excavations at nearby Pueblo Viejo revealed early human activity in this region dating back 6500 years including evidence that human sacrifice took place here before being supplanted by animal sacrifices more common among Native American nations such as those found in central North America such as maize offerings and beaver hunts under high ceremonial occasions such as Fiesta del Sol (Ridiculous Sun Festival). In 1821, after centuries of conflict between Spanish colonists living along both sides of the Rio Grande River Valley andNative Americans across what is now New Mexico Territory, General Antonio López de Mendizábal called for a march onSanta Fe from Ciudad Juárez through present-day Albuquerque into claims made by Apache Chief Manuel Orozco y Zúñiga over territory northeastward extending all the way to Colorado Springs or even eastward past La Plata Creek into today’s Oklahoma County during winter months when water levels were low enough for travel but too high during summer months for travel or camping allowed by contemporary Anglo settlers Territorial Governor José Joaquín Cabeza de Vaca decided not only not to march but also ordered General José Manuel Abreu instead to retake Albuquerque from Orozco y Zúñiga without bloodshed On July 7th 1824 troops consisting mainlyof Ute Scouts forced their way into Albuquerque through Downtown streets where they encountered resistance led by Mayor Pedro Ortiz who had earlier warned inhabitants against violence impending if force was used against them After some skirmishes and several dayslong siege conditions inside Albuquerque were created with walls aroundOld Town built mostlyofadobeandlogs withstanding small fire attemptsby Utes while civilian militia under Captain Fernando Romero fought off repeated assaults delivered by Abreu over three weeks until finally surrendering on September 14th 1824 ending nearly 350 yearsof communal warfare between Spanish colonists living along both sides of Rio Grande Valley vs Ancestral Navajo & Acoma People residing within territorial limits since precontact times
In 1849, Father Miguel de la Hoz founded the Mission Santa Fe de Nuevo Mexico. The mission was a Catholic church and school for Native Americans who were living in the area. The school was also used as a military post by Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In 1857, the Mexican government agreed to recognize Santa Fe as an independent city and renamed it Ciudad Juárez after Juárez, Chihuahua's president at the time. The city lost its independence in 1912 when Tamaulipas seceded from Mexico.
