Over time, other Spanish forts were built throughout New Mexico: San Miguel at Alamogordo (1597), Chapultepec at Carlsbad (1602), Cerro Gordo at Rio Grande City (1610),Santa Fe at Doña Ana (1614), Dona Ana del Norte about 28 miles southeast of Albuquerque on Route 66 (1795). During these early years in New Mexico’s history there were few permanent residents because most people came seeking mineral rights or land grants fromSpanish colonists or governments during the 18th century gold rush era when trading posts proliferated along routes leading out from frontier settlements such as Santa Fe. As development around Santa Fe increased through ranching and farming activities over the next several decades following Hispanic settlement there was more opportunity for Mexicans living northward to intermingle with Anglo Americans who had moved southward during that period2 . Eventually many Hispanics became assimilated into their new societies4 . Today some 6%–7%of Albuquerque’s population are descendants of those original Mexican settlers5 .
