Santa Fe is a city in New Mexico, United States. The population was 55,890 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Santa Fe County. Santa Fe is surrounded by Rio Grande on three sides and the US-Mexico border on one side. The city'spreservation district contains more than 230 buildings from various periods of its history. The first Europeans to visit what is now Santa Fe were Italian pastors who established a mission there in 1695. Eventually, Spanish traders and travelers also discovered the area, and in 1784 Father Antonio de Urrea founded an abbey here that served as the capital of Chihuahua Province until 1824 when it moved to Taos (now Albuquerque). In 1827 Santa Fe became part of New Mexico after Mexican independence from Spain was gained; it remained an Indian military post until 1863, when it became a civilian town under the jurisdiction of New Mexico Territory. In 1880 there were only about 125 people living in downtown SantaFe; within 100 years those numbers had grown to over 10,000 residents due to waves of Hispanic immigration and development around downtown as well as new housing developments built along Avenida de las Américas and Paseo del Norte. In 1912 Tucson-based oilman John D’Arcy Sweeny donated land north of downtown for a civic center and park which would become known as Sweeny Park after him. That same year two commercial streets were renamed: Alameda de la Mujer (Alameda Street) in honor of San Francisco Madero's wife Dolores Huerta and Obispo (bishop) José Vasconcelos Boulevard in honor of José Vasconcelos' predecessor García Márquez y Cicerón who had been elected Mayor of México City just two months earlier on December 6th 1911 during Porfirio Diaz's term as President with Progresista support. Downtown business owners began calling their newly created avenue “Alameda” instead of “Paseo” or “América” Streets because they wanted everyone to know that this was now the main artery leading into downtown from all directions including east down Avenida Miranda which then intersected Paseo del Norte at La Vaquería before continuing northeast through Plaza de la Constitución past Don Carlos Alvarez Barriles home where he once lived before turning southeast onto Churubusco Avenue parallel to today's Main Street then turning northwest onto Dobson Avenue concurrent with today's old Iberia Road while still paralleling today's Main Street going east/west across Market Square then turning northwest onto Today's Bernardo Young Parkway rejoining Alameda de la Mujer shortly afterwards becoming partofDowntownSantaFe again followingAlamodelamujeanswitchingcoerciveactionwithpupilsfromDormitionOldSchoolHousewhichselfisdeadin1978after42years One early resident associated with the founding of modern day SantaFe was doctor José Armando Romero who came up with the idea for a mission station near what is now Albuquerque back in 1824 while traveling through present day southern New Mexico He recommended that priests establish an outpost southward from Socorro so that friars could preach Christianity among Native Americans but nothing ever came off because no one wanted to leave their homes behind There were other reports throughout this period suggesting atheist Mexicans might want too so Santiago Gomez took matters into his own hands founding San Miguel Mission Independencia on February 12th 1830 without any previous notice or planning

Spanish traders and travelers called this region Las Colinas because of these high mountains that stretched for more than 100 miles (160 km). Spanish settlers arrived in what is now New Mexico in 1765 through grants from Spain to various groups of southern Natives. The first permanent European residents were Franciscans who founded Mission San Francisco de Asís (1797) on Coyoacán Hill overlooking today's downtown; they soon moved out because of religious persecution by Spain. A different group of missionaries founded Mission Nuestra Señora del Carmen el Río de las Animas (1809) on present-day Adobe Road northeast of downtown; again they had trouble getting permission from Spanish authorities to establish their mission near a major trade center like Albuquerque so they relocated it farther away in 1810 fortress style into a new hilltop location east of town named La Quinta Park after José Quinziato y Trigo hermanoMayorofAlbuquerqueandfuturePresidentOfMexicoAlbertoNaderGarza
In 1867, the New Mexico Territory was organized from parts of what is now Arizona and Texas. Santa Fe was the first permanent city in this territory. The city grew rapidly due to its location at the convergence of several major trails, as well as its trade with other Mexican settlements in east-central New Mexico. SantaFe became a leading center for Spanish culture and politics in Mesoamerica. In 1912, Santa Fe was designated capital of the new state of New Mexico.
