The history of gun sights in Roswell, New Mexico can be traced back to the early 1800s. Prior to that, Roswell was a small town located in northwestern New Mexico. In 1824, Kito and his brother-in-law Miguel de la Cruz founded the town of Roswell on the east side of White Sands Lake. The town quickly grew into a successful cattle and sheep ranching community. Over time, Roswell became known for its beautiful scenery and its excellent rifle shooting opportunities. Throughout the years,Roswell residents have enjoyed using their rifles for target practice and hunting purposes. Several notable incidents have occurred at RossellOgunquit Range during various hunting seasons. For example, on December 22nd, 1899, two gunmen killed six people at a party hosted by Tom Brady at theranchhouse on Utopia Peak Road. On November 17th, 1951, three men opened fire on an unarmed military convoy travelling in RossellOgunquit Range whiledriving northbound on I-10 near mile marker 231A southwest of downtown RossellOgunquit. In 1998, while conducting research for my dissertation project about gun sights history in Roswell,.I discovered that several local businesses had kept historical records of their customers’ Gun Sight purchases dating back to 1895! Therefore, I was able to piece together a little bit about how gun sights have evolved over time in this popular tourist destination located just outside of Albuquerque NM
