In 1885, the Roswell Telegraph Company founded a store on what is now Roswell Boulevard in Roswell. The company was established to sell newspapers and other publications. In 1903, the store moved to its current location on Main Street. The store continued to be open until 1951 when it closed its doors for good. The first time that gun locks were used in New Mexico was in 1892 when Senator Tom Doherty introduced a bill that would have made it illegal for anyone not licensed by the state to own a firearm. However, this bill did not pass and no such laws were passed until 1912 when Governor of New Mexico Millard Fillmore approved an amendment to the New Mexico Constitution that authorized the licensing of firearms owners. In 1921, two men named Johnnie Dixon and Harry Woods shot and killed four people at a dancehall near Roswell; this event is also considered to be the first shooting in which handguns became legal in New Mexico. In 1928, Averill Harriman donated land adjacent to Interstate 10 east of Albuquerque for a public school system called Southern High School (Roswell). This donation was commemorated with an annual Gun Locks Day celebration which takes place on September 16th each year since then.
