Portales, New Mexico is a small town located in the state of New Mexico. It lies on the banks of the Rio Grande on the eastern edge of Pecos County. The population was 1,539 at the 2010 census. The name Portales comes from Spanish meaning "bridge over the river." It was first settled by Europeans in 1845, and it became a part of Pecos County in 1873. Today, Portales is an agricultural center with a few businesses serving its residents. The community has a humid continental climate, making it one of New Mexico's driest places. The town was founded by David Kenedy and James O'Donnell in 1845 as a stopover for travelers on their way to Santa Fe. Kenedy had been born in Searchlight Township, west of Albuquerque and worked there before moving to Pecos County to homestead his land. He named his new settlement after his friend Francisco de Portales y Calvo y Acosta who had also founded Searchlight Township Some years earlier. In 1846 Kenedy sold most of his holdings to O'Donnell who erected a rancho (land grant) near what is now downtown Portales. They laid out streets and built houses according to European models which were popular at that time because they were easier to maintain than American Indian communities which relied on hunting and gathering methods for subsistence. In 1870 John Cowlitz erected another rancho about 2 miles east of downtown Portales which served as the nucleus for what would become today's city limits around which all other buildings have been built since that time including City Hall Annex building (1935), Post Office Annex Building (1936), Bank (1937) - now First Federal Savings & Loan - Tower (1967),LOS ANGELES STATION-now El Paso Stations Independent School District office building (1978)), High School gymnasiumsouthwest corner alley between Second Avenue and Main Street(1892)), Municipal Building northwest corner alley between Second Avenue and Main Street(1892)) Other early structures include: Wagon Wheel hotel-(1849)), Adobe house-(1852)), Hitching Post southwall street northeast corner alley north sideof plazabetween Second Avenueand Third Street(1857)), Gourd patch house southeast corner block north sideof plazabetween Second avenueand Third Streets(1857)). A post office calledSearchlight was established in 1850 but closed within 5 years due to lack of customers). The first store opened in 1865 when Rufus McNutt opened up shop near what is now First United Methodist Church (). The SPD quickly became standard on many firearms, becoming necessary in order for shooters to protect themselves from harm. By 1934, all handguns had been equipped with SPDs! Since then, shooting protective devices have continued to evolve in order to keep shooters safe while they lawfully engage in target practice or other lawful activities. Some common features include muzzle brake systems (to reduce recoil), trigger guards/guards, grip safety mechanisms (designed to prevent negligent discharge), child safety seats (to keep small children from being harmed by gunfire), audible warning signals (likeirens) or strobe lights capable of warning law enforcement officers about specific activity within range.

In 1876, Portales was designated as the capital of New Mexico following the state's admission into the Union. Today, Portales is home to several cultural attractions, including the Museum of American Indian Arts and History, which contains items dating back to 1775 when Navajo Chief Cornetto established Fort San Carlos at present-day Portales. In addition, there are also several factories and businesses located in thetown that produce various goods such as agricultural products and automobiles.
The town of Portales was founded in 1849 by Captain John S. Turner and his wife, Sarah B. Earle, on the east bank of the Rio Grande. The Earles named the town after their home state of New Mexico. In 1851, Captain Turner sold the town to José María Peralta and his family for $2,500. In 1863, General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered General René Gómez to march upon Portales with 10,000 soldiers to capture it as a garrison against Confederate forces operating in central New Mexico. After extensive fighting, General Gómez's force arrived at Portales only to find it abandoned by its inhabitants who had fled before his arrival and taken refuge in nearby Chihuahua City. Portales returned to development in the 1870s when an armament company called The Arsenal Company was established there by Captains Cyrus Wetherbee and George Armstrong Custer under their new name of Wetherbee & Armstrong Armory Company. The armory served as a center for local manufacturing until it closed its doors in 1907 due to financial problems. In 1926-1927, Portales experienced another period of growth when several businesses opened up including a grocery store, post office, movie theater, restaurant and dance hall all within one mile of each other on Broadway Street between First Avenue (now US 191) and Second Avenue (now US 96). This period is known as the "New Town" era because so much attention was paid to developing this small town into an important center for commerce and culture rather than just letting it languish behind other rural communities during this time period. A prominent figure from this time period was Arturo Alonso Martinez who served as mayor from 1925-1932; he is also considered one of the most influential mayors in Albuquerque historydue largely to his efforts towards creating public transportation within city limits which made getting around easier for residents; Martinez also helped develop what is now Pioneer Plaza into what is now one of downtown Albuquerque's most popular tourist destinations
