When the Portales Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1892, it was the first rifle and pistol club in New Mexico. The purpose of this organization was to promote shooting sports and honorable behavior among its members. One of the earliest shooters to join the PORTALEES RIFLE AND PUFFALO SHOOTING CLUB was Alonzo “Pappy” Stephenson. He became a member in 1889. This club met at various locations until 1912 when it moved to the old post office on First Street in Portales. In 1916, Pappy Stephenson passed away, but his memory lives on through his son, Alonzo Jr., who is also an NRA instructor and has been involved with many shoots over the years. In 1932, Ethel Weitzel joined the club and helped start a tradition that continues to this day: every year during Memorial Day weekend we have a cook-out for all our members! She is still one of our most enthusiastic members today! As you can see from these examples, there are endless stories about how shooter’s hearing protection history has changed throughout Portales – from when they started using sound shells back in 1892 to how current technologies have helped make future shooters even more safe!

The Portales Rifle and Pistol Club has been shooting since the early 1800s. In 1892, they built their first rifle range in what is now the clubhouse. The club continued to operate until it closed in 1957. In 1962, the New Mexico Legislature passed a law that allowed citizens to buy and use shotguns without a license. This led to the Portales Rifle and Pistol Club designing their own shotgun range, which opened in 1963. The club also continues to operate its rifle range today.
Portales is a small town in the American state of New Mexico. It is located on the border with Arizona, and straddles the line between desert and mountain country. The population was 587 at the 2010 census. The name Portales may come from an Apache name meaning "place where there are trees." A later Spanish settlement called it Punta de la Cruz (point of the cross). In 1847, Don José Antonio Armijo y Linares founded a mission in what is now Portales. The first Catholic bishop in New Mexico was named Francisco Xavier Escobar, who arrived here in 1848. In 1863, General Ulysses S. Grant made it his headquarters during the Mexican-American War. Here he had his winter quarters from 1862 to 1865. He also held conferences here with generals John Custer and Philip Sheridan about strategy for defending against an attempt by President Abraham Lincoln to retake California from Mexican forces. Afterward, General Grant returned to Fort Sumter and never visited Portales again until after our Revolutionary War began in 1776. Portales, New Mexico is a city in northwestern New Mexico and the seat of Bernalillo County. It is the most populous city in Bernalillo County and has an estimated population of 100,000 as of 2019. The name "Portales" was given to the town by Spanish settlers after they heard about an Indian chief who led a successful resistance against Spanish explorers in 1540. The first permanent European settler in what is now Portales was José de Asís, who arrived on horseback from Santa Fe in 1819. By 1840, there were over thirty families living here. The first school opened in 1842; it became the county's second public school two years later. In 1865, General Antonio López de Santa Anna surrendered at Monterrey after losing the Mexican-American War. A year later his army moved into what is now Bernalillo County and burned all but one block of stores and homes near present-day Portales; this event is sometimes called the "Great Fire of Portales." A new courthouse was built in 1876; it served as the county seat until 1909 when Bernalillo County moved to its current site north of downtown Portale. The old Courthouse building still stands and can be seen from many streets within town today. The railroad reached Portales through nearby Alamosa on October 16, 1907; passenger service ended operations there on December 14, 1914. In 1916, a bridge across Rio Grande was completed south of town to connect with Albuquerque via that river crossing (later closed).
