Portales is a small town in the U.S. state of New Mexico. It is located on the east bank of the Rio Grande, about 25 miles southwest of Albuquerque and 50 miles northeast of Roswell. The population was 2,904 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit this area were Spanish explorers in 1540-1545. A mission called San Francisco de Portales was founded here by Franciscan missionaries in 1796–1797, and changed its name to Rancho San José in 1827 after it purchased land from Manuel Canseco for £500 (U$1,500). In 1881, during the American Revolution, local militia killed two British soldiers who had been scouting through this area for Confederate forces; this event is generally known as the Battle of Portales. The town also experienced goldmining activity starting around 1859 until 1865 when most of what is now Portales was abandoned due to poor topography and disease following some extremely harsh winters that year. The first post office opened in 1886; it was renamed Northport in 1907 before becoming Portales again in 1912. Water access began improving greatly here after a well drilled by George Wellman became operational near present day El Paso Street and Broadway in 1903; other improvements came with increased electricity generation starting around 1912 which led to more jobs being created hereabouts as engineers designed new water systems including one pump station built just south of present day Paseo del Norte Avenue west of Interstate 10 serving all parts of town as well as Cuevas Lake west of I-10 also providing drinking water for all residents without charge until 1978 when services were privatized under Eagle Ford Pipeline Company’s system today known affectionately as “Eagle Ford” service . This period saw an increase not only in population but also development with many businesses opening up such as grain elevators, banks & stores along with homespun cotton mills which closed down during World War II due to restrictions placed on exports by the United States government
At the time of European exploration in 1521, Portales was one of the most important towns in New Mexico. It sat at the junction of two routes that lead to Santa Fe and Albuquerque. The town was also a crossroads for trade with the Mexican states of Chihuahua and Durango. The first Europeans to set foot in what is now New Mexico were Spanish explorers who traveled through what is now Texas in search of new lands to explore. In 1521, Pedro de Alvarado reached present-day Albuquerque on his way from Mexico City. He called this area "New Spain" and made it his headquarters. Alvarado's expedition followed a route that passed through what is now northeastern New Mexico. In 1610, Fransico Pacheco sailed upriver from Veracruz and discovered the Rio Grande Valley. This opened up new opportunities for trade with Native Americans and Spain began trading goods with these groups for many years before ships became available to explore further into North America. In 1795, Don Miguel de la Hoz founded Rancho San José de la Abadía near today's Ciudad Juárez, New Mexico along the Rio Grande River. La Hoz sold this land to Captain Pedro Fuego on July 2, 1795 for $3,000 UPI ($27,600 today). The rancho became one of the largest cattle ranches in history and was used by both Spanish colonists and United States forces during World War II as a military base known as Fort Bliss (now El Paso County Airport).
