Portales, New Mexico is a small town of approximately 9,000 residents in the western sector of the US state of New Mexico. It is located on the Animas River and it lies within Pima County. The name "Portales" comes from Spanish meaning "headquarters." The first Europeans to visit this area were French missionaries in 1795. They named the river's course after an old mapmaker who had been killed in a horseback ride near present-day Portales. The town was founded by José de la Cruz Portales on April 12, 1847 as a rancho (land grant) for his father Francisco Portales y Ulloa. By 1870, the population had grown to over 500 people and by 1880 it had reached 1,300 people. In 1927 there were only 43 inhabitants living in portales when ranchers Don Carlos Armijo and Eduardo Medina purchased 640 acres (250 hectares) along theAnimas River from José Cáceres Hidalgo for $2 per acre ($26 million at current prices).
