It is located on the west bank of the Rio Grande, about 20 miles (32 km) south of Ciudad Juárez and 120 miles (180 km) north of Mexico City. The town has been inhabited for more than 350 years, first by Pueblo people and then by Spanish colonists. The name Portales comes from the old Nahuatl word "porta," meaning "bridge." The Spanish founded a mission here in 1719 and named it San Miguel de Portales after Saint Miguel, an early Christian missionary who had journeyed to this area in 1502. In 1846, during the Mexican-American War, General Antonio López de Santa Anna sent his army through Paso del Norte into New Mexico Territory to attack Ulysses S. Grant's Union forces under General Albert Sidney Johnston. The portales Massacre took place on May 30th when Confederate soldiers led by Captain George Hennessey massacred some Pueblo men at an Adobe Fort near present-day Portales while they were grazing their horses outside the fortifications. As a result of this atrocity, Santa Anna was forced to retreat from New Mexico and ordered to leave most of his troops behind in Albuquerque; he did not return to Chihuahua until November 11th that year. One important event which occurred in Portales during this time was the arrival there on October 15th, 1881 of Fray José María Arcás with twelve Franciscan missionaries from Baja California who were accompanying Manuel Micheltorena on his unsuccessful attempt to establish a presence among Native Americans east of Tucson along what is now known as Route 66. After spending several weeks preaching among local Indians before departing for Arizona via horseback trailhead known as Mormon Rowdy Passalong Old road leading downriver towards Prescott Valley but never reached Prescott Valley because Emperor Agustín Elizondo blockaded both sides at Yuma River Bridge where river met desertion path creating what is now known as I-10 Loop route they finally arrived safely at San Francisco Mission Santa Fe Californian settlementSanta Fe Doña Ana County
