Portales, New Mexico is a small town in the San Miguel County seat of Socorro. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. In 1835, Manuel Micheltorena established a post office here and named it after him. It became an incorporated municipality in 1886 and has since grown rapidly due to its location on the railroad and its position as a bedroom community for Albuquerque. What makes Portales unique is that it has two main businesses: one engaged in manufacturing goods such as textiles, plastics and engineering materials; while the other specializes exclusively in gambling: casinos!
