Portales is a small town in the County of Portales, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,854 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Albuquerque-Municipality. The first people to live in what is now Portales were Spanish ranch hands who arrived from Spain in 1812. They came down the Rio Grande and established a trading post here. The first school was started in 1819 by Mrs. Elizabeth Ladd and operated for one year before being closed due to financial difficulties. A log church was built in 1826 and served as the parish church until it burned down in 1865. A post office was established at Portales in 1827, but it wasn’t until 1830 that a store opened here by J N Sperling with help from Captain John Romero of Fort Bliss on the Chama River. In 1861, Mr P C Hennepin donated land for a public square which became known as “Hennepin Square” today! In 1865, when parts of New Mexico were acquired by California during the Mexican-American War, Portales had about 100 residents and two businesses – an inn and a store – both still extant today! A new courthouse was built here in 1886 which served as county seat until 1912 when Albuquerque took over that role. The cotton industry formed around this time however it didn’t last very long because there weren’t any good shipping opportunities upriver from Coahuila City (now Mexicali). Sooner or later all these operations moved away to other places such as Socorro or Durango etc., leaving behind just a few hundred inhabitants hereabouts! Schools began back again in 1927 with Mrs Ladd serving as principal until her death in 1928; after that it continued under private auspices with several teachers graduating each year! Today only 1st grade through 8th grades are offered though there are some kids who go to school during morning hours if they have an older sibling who can care for them while mom works!! There isn’t even space for them all inside our building anymore so they must attend outside providers like Schools For All or First Steps which are way better quality than what we have today!!! In recent years weve seen some progress but most importantly its not easy living without hope so please keep support us thru donations & activism!!!!!

Portales, New Mexico is a town in Otero County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in Otero County. The first people to live here were the Chiricahua and Acoma cultures. They were followed by the Hopi and Pueblo of Anasazi origin. These groups built great homes and traded goods with other communities. The first Spanish settlers arrived in 1821 and named it after Manuel Antonio Portales who had been governor of Sonora at the time. By 1840, there were over 400 Spaniards living here. The railroad came through this area in 1886 and made Commerce City possible as well as bringing new jobs to the area. In 1912, when Senator Jameson Ide downgraded New Mexico's social security program because of skyrocketing taxes, Portales became one of many towns that lost its eligibility for support under federal programs such as Social Security due to its size or lack of economic development opportunities outside of town limits). In spite of these challenges, Portales has experienced significant growth over the years including a construction boom starting in the 1960s that saw much-needed improvements made to local schools and roads; an influx of Hispanics during Community Choice Neighborhood Development (CCND) programs which helped create more affordable housing; a resurgence in tourism beginning in the 1990s which has led to increased business activity around town; and most recently, an increase in Interstate 10 traffic due to nearby Northface ski resort being developed on land formerly used for farming
The first European to explore the area now known as Portales was Jesuit Father Francisco Vásquez in 1541. The area was part of the Spanish Empire until it was conquered by Mexico in 1836. In 1863, entrepreneur Fray José de la Peña founded a small town called Portales on the eastern banks of the Rio Grande River. La Peña's townsite evolved into an agricultural center that grew rapidly due to his irrigation system and other innovations. Portales became a municipal seat in 1912, and it remained an important commercial and political center through most of Mexican history. In 1978, after years of decline, Portales became an official U.S. city when it joined Albuquerque as one of its two vice-mayors under then- mayor Hernán Cortés Blanco. Today, Portales is home to a variety of cultural attractions including the Escorial University School of Art and Design, whichopened in 2004; the La Peña Museum of History & Art; and several restaurants and small businesses
