In the early 1800s, when Portales was founded by Mormon settlers, it was a small town with few inhabitants. However, over time the town grew and developed into a major center of trade and commerce in the area. In 1854, with the opening of the Santa Fe Trail, Portales became an important stop on this vital route. The town continued to grow as businesses opened up and people began moving in from all over New Mexico to enjoy its natural resources and lively culture. Due to its importance as a commercial center and its close proximity to Santa Fe, Portales also saw a large influx of gun owners. This led to some interesting development throughout the years – for example, in 1879, Portales became one of only two towns in New Mexico (the other being Alamogordo) that allowed firearms sales without a permit. AsPortales grew and changed over time, so too did its gun laws. In 1931, portales hosted its first modern-day rifle match which helped initiate handgun regulation in New Mexico. This also caused businesses in town to start up and portale began becoming a manufacturing center for agricultural products such as cotton, cornmeal, wheat flour and other goods until World War II when the military base closed down operations and the town slowly declined into obscurity. In recent years however, there has been some resurgence of interest in portsale because of its location within close proximity to Los Angeles International Airport and its potential for development as an airport village with housing units, retail stores, restaurants and office space available along with green space for community use such as a park or fields for athletic events. In addition to these activities there are also occasional performances by local bands at local venues which add some excitement level missing from towns like Portales where live music may be seen more often than not during weekdays but disappear on weekends when families are home - something that can make attending concerts much more pleasant overall!

In 1847, a group of Mexicans bypassed the California Trail and began traveling northeast through New Mexico. They were looking for a route to get to Santa Fe from Taos. The party was led by José de la Torre, who had earlier become involved in the Mexican War of Independence. The party arrived at what is now Portales in 1848. José de la Torre named the town after his mother, Mary de la Puente. La Torre's group also founded what is now Pueblo del Rey on the east side of the mesa in 1850.
