The fair was also one of the most important events in town's history because it marked the beginning of harnessing energy from coal mines to power local homes and businesses. The railroad came throughportales in 1887 and made it easier for people to get to Albuquerque andSanta Fe. At that time portales had a small post office with two clerks responsible for mail delivery and processing mail. After World War II many businesses closed down due to lack of business opportunities or television advertising; however some have reopened since then such as ABC Radio station KLOS-TV & KERA radio which are now owned by iHeartMedia Corporation., which owns all FM stations in New Mexico including KLOS-FM 102.7 MHz & KERA 97.3 MHz
