The town is named after Francisco de Portales y Valdés, who founded it in 1835. The original name for the town was San Juan Bautista, but because of its location on a river and because it was considered to be too dangerous to live there, the town changed its name in 1881. The first people to reside in what is now Portales were Osage Indians. They arrived here around 1800 and started trading with Spanish traders. In 1836, José María Peralta led an expedition from Santa Fe into what is now New Mexico and discovered this area that would later become Portales. He named the place San Miguel de Allende after his patron saint, St. Miguel of Compostela Cathedral in Spain. When Governor Manuel Carrera moved his government from Santa Fe to Albuquerque in 1846, he established a new Post Office here at San Miguel de Allende which served as our primary center for mail services until 1926 when we moved to Plaza España across the street from our current building (now known as Main Street). In 1850 Don Nicolás Sánchez donated land east of downtown for a school and Hospital which were both completed in 1863 by Doctor Pedro Martinez De la Garza including today’s main square within its boundaries; these events are celebrated each year on October 15th as “Don Nicolás Day” due to their impact on the community and education here today! In 1865 Antonio Rosselló granted 500 acres (2 hectares) north of downtown lot number 33 sterling silver coins worth $1 per pound weight being struck by two Zacatecas mints called Los Angeles Novenos through American Express Company agents John Waddell & James Hogg - one specimen has been authenticated MS-62/68 . These valuable coins have generated much interest among collectors over time with many items reaching 1000 dollars or more! After months long negotiations between various parties including businessmen George Hearn & Assis Cantú plus Government surveyors Captains Lorenzo Brittain & Baltasar Griswold leading up to final approval by Petrified Forest District Judge Isidoro Moreno this certificate was issued On December 10th 1870 Vespers Evening - just prior to Christmas giving usuela's first real storefront appearance fronting Main Avenue !Incidentally Don Nicolas Sánchezwas also elected Mayor pro tem during this time!
