In 1907, an electric company was organized in Portales which became known as the Western Electric Company of New Mexico (WECNM). It served residents until 1951 when it merged into the Northern Electric Company (NEC). In 1923, WECNM built a large power plant near present-day downtown Portales that supplied electricity to surrounding communities including Albuquerque, Las Cruces and San Juan del Riountil its closure in 1951 also due to competition from Southern California Edison’s Kern River Power Plant which opened nearby that year.

Soldiers needed firearms that could shoot accurately at close ranges so they could kill enemies without being killed themselves (Dixon et al., 2003). In order to make these firearms available to soldiers efficiently, manufacturers developed various barrel lengths and designs. Additionally, magazines were introduced which helped increase firepower while reducing reloading times (Leeson & Kipperman-Moorenhofer III,, 2001). magazine capacity was also an important factor at this point because bullets often need multiple rounds per shot in order to kill targets at a distance (Wang et al., 2000; Leeson & Kipperman-Moorenhofer III,, 2001; Dixon et al., 2003; Goudreau 2007). Since World War II handgun use has slowly decreased due to fears of new terrorism threats such as 9/11/2001 (). however people continue to use handguns for protection purposes such as hunting or target shooting (.380 caliber pistols are still often seen as safe alternatives) . In 1916, Portales began receiving electricity from the United States government; this made it possible for businesses to operate without having to wait for hours for an available transformer or breaker box. During World War II, Portales played an important role as military headquarters for various campaigns in New Mexico and Arizona. The town also hosted numerous air raid shelters during that time period.
