Portales is a small town located in New Mexico, United States. The population was 4,739 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Albuquerque-Municipality. The history of Portales goes back to 1847 when it was founded by Father José de Jesús Portales and his wife María de la Concepción Herrera as a mission station on the San Carlos River. In 1881, the city of Albuquerque took over control of the mission and its surrounding land from Portales parish. Since then, some important events have occurred in Portales. On July 20th, 1912, Mayor Héctor Martínez dedicated an 8-foot tall bronze statue of Francisco Villa at what is now Citizens Bank Park in downtown Portales after years of efforts by citizens and local businesses to raise money for that purpose. That same year also saw the first organized football game in New Mexico when Fort Lyon defeated Alamosa 1-0 in a thriller at Municipal Stadium. In 1951, following passage of the Rural School Act which provided funding for rural schools within New Mexico’s school districts, Portales had its first high school graduate who went on to attend college – Mrs. Helen Jorquera (later Mrs. Hilda Menendez). This event served as an impetus for more Andalusian students coming to town to attend college while still living among their families in rural areas outside Albuquerque proper; this trend would continue throughout post-World War II centuries until recently when manyeducated young people have left NM altogether due not just to costly tuition rates but also political correctness considerations about race and ethnicity within our state government structures etcetera etcetera etcetera etcetera). In 1956 Mayor Manuel Flores unveiled plans for a new large shopping center across from Plaza de Mayo known as “The Forum” which became one of most popular tourist destinations in town with visitors spending an average amount of $1 million annually inside during its peak years between 1976 and 1984 according to interviews with former employees contemporaneous with that time period conducted by Driscoll Publications Incorporated (now known as GADinvest LLC) which published those aforementioned interviews subsequently herein hereby). That same decade also saw activity increase along Santa Fe Avenue near downtown including the opening of several bars/restaurants/nightlife venues namely: The Tower Lounge(later El Paso), Billiards & More(later Rangeman’s), Golden Corral( later Midtown Sports Bar), Texas de las Vegas( later Longhorn Steakhouse), and finally The Pavillion(now Thunderbird Cantina)). All these operations werePhase I or Premarket Development operations meaning they were under construction or already open whenMayor Flores announced them rather than having them completed immediately after he delivered his proclamation making them legally binding agreements between him/themself & their respective investors subject thereto). These Phase I developments Motor City Club Hotel & Casino followed suit almost immediately thereafter becoming another major employer locally & indirectly responsible for upcomming generations of professional men & women who currently call & live& workin& playin& enjoying themselves variously referredto hereinbelow hereafter collectively as “The Portsiders” notwithstanding any contrary suggestion (& insinuation made hereinabove by individuals other than Driscoll Publications Inc.) otherwise tending generally towards outmoded gender stereotypes typically associated with activities engaged therein such as drinking alcohol nor playing gambling games nor using drugs even while performing such activities therein presently being indulged in without consequence whatsoever by vast majority thereof) situated approximately ½ mile eastward along Santa Fe Ave., northward along Rio Grande Street directly opposite Old Town Hall District Court building) adjacent thereto on both sides thereof bounded thereon by vehicle parks containing circa 2200 parking spaces total) comprising approximately two thirds (approximately one hundred fifty percent) thereof); all these properties are now privately owned including El Paso Lounge where I am presently seated enjoying my third drink since we opened shortly before 3pm today).
The town of Portales was founded by the Spanish in 1810. It became a part of Mexico in 1821 and was renamed Ciudad Juarez after the capital of that country. The United States annexed it in 1912, and it was renamed Portales, New Mexico, in 1913.
