After 1945, Portales slowly lost its importance as a community until the late 1990s when growth resumed due to its location on Interstate 10 and its relationship with nearby Tucson (which had become Arizona's most populous city). Today, Portales remains an agricultural center with significant employment opportunities in manufacturing and services such as accounting and real estate development. Its downtown contains a number of cultural attractions including the oldest library in Arizona (opened in 1910) and two theaters built specifically for movie viewing: one dating back to 1916 and renovated in 2009; while another theater opened in 2017 adjacent to Interstate 10 between downtown Phoenix and Scottsdale Airport serving both general aviation traffic as well as entertainment options such as Cirque du Soleil shows

The town was founded in 1868 by Americans and Mexican nationals as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
