Today's Portales is located on both sides of Route 66 – which runs through its center – making it one of few places in the world where two major highways meet head-on (the other being Tokyo). Portales is a small town located in the Mexican state of Baja California on the Pacific Coast. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Mexicali metropolitan area and its municipal seat is Portales. The town was founded by Spanish colonists in 1719 as San Cristóbal de la Laguna, named for St. Christopher of Tours. The name may have been derived from an Indian word meaning "sinkhole." In 1847,Portales became part of Coahuila y Tejas and then Pueblo de México under the jurisdiction of Chihuahua province. In 1868, Mexico achieved independence from Spain and Portales became part of the new Mexican Republic under President Benito Juárez. After years of political instability and economic decline, Portales’ fortunes began to improve with the arrival in 1906 of George Armstrong Custer, who made it his basecamp during his journey across Mexicoland for what would become known as America's First World War. As American forces advanced into central Mexico in 1916-17, General John J Pershing ordered Custer's division to cross over country through Tijuana into Baja California to cut off German supplies entering that state from Guerrero on the opposite side of Lake Chapala. On February 14th 1918 while leading his division across Tijuana Bridge into La Quinta Wells County (now Imperial County), Pershing was killed when his command vehicle crashed into a tree near present-day Paso Robles Airport; Custer was posthumously awarded the Medal Of Honor for this event. In 1932 Portales erected a large concrete plaza called Plaza Mayor Centro Histórico in honor of Commodore James Wainwright who had landed at Playa del Carmen Bay on November 25th 1912 with USS Olympia and USS Arizona to help build Los Angeles Harbor; Wainwright also donated land forTorrance Memorial Park adjacent to Las Palmas Schoolhouse which still stands today as one of Los Angeles’ most popular tourist attractions In 1952 FM 98.3FM started airing out OFDUWA music programming which has continued until this day
The town of Portales was founded in 1827 by José Antonio Vargas. It was named for Don Bernardo de Portales, Viceroy of New Mexico. The town grew quickly and by 1845 had a population of 1,200 people. In 1849, the Mexican government granted the town land to build a courthouse and jail. The town also built a school, post office, and two churches. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Portales supported Confederate forces against Union forces. After the war, the town became part of the United States. The town's economy changed after its annexation into New Mexico in 1912. In 1916,Portales incorporated as a city.
